Our story

Big-City Expertise. Small-Studio Heart.

Tori Ponder-Brown and Chimêne Montivero-Cole founded The Pilates Room in 2001 in a 200 square foot space on Ithaca’s East Hill. Almost everyone who started with us then has stayed, and has grown with us into today’s 2,500 square foot private training studio and classroom on North Tioga Street.

In 2023 we took a new name. Vellíðan (pronounced vell-y-dthan) is an Icelandic word for wellness: mental strength and physical well-being together. It fits what the studio has become.

We offer “big city classes” to small groups. Our clients range from 25 to 85, and they are the most supportive, welcoming and interesting group of people you could hope to meet.
